Vitamins, Valium, and Sciatica

Lonely on Earth

Man with backache leaning against wall

I have a pinched sciatic nerve. Some days the pain is so bad my teeth chatter, as though I’m freezing – but it’s merely an expression of intense pain. At night, I cover my right side in a chain of analgesic patches from hip to ankle. It’s the only way I sleep. I wake and smell of camphor and menthol. I peel the patches off before I shower; it hurts less than tearing off  band aids, but sometimes they leave red marks.

I eat breakfast, I take vitamins – and then a muscle relaxer to stave off the spasms that have come routinely to at first hint and then insist on moving in by mid afternoon. I put on my professional clothes and my makeup, try to do something passable with my wild hair, and pack for the day. On the train, I smile at the conductor as I board, show my pass, and finally lay my head against…

Gordon Dove: fox in the House Natural Resources Committee henhouse, or perhaps it’s just Louisiana Jindaltics as usual

Louisiana Voice

That citation of Dual Trucking Co. by the Montana Department of Environmental Equality for dumping oilfield radioactive waste from the nearby Bakken Oilfield, it turns out, is not the only problem State Rep. Gordon Dove (R-Houma) has experienced with environmental authorities, LouisianaVoice has learned.

Vacco Marine, Inc., a company owned by Dove, who chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, has been the subject of several investigations, negative reports, citations, and compliance orders by and from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) over a period of several years, records show.

Last week, while presiding over a meeting of the Natural Resources Committee, he joined 12 other members in passing an amendment to SB 469 that made the prohibition against suing oil companies for damages to the state’s wetlands and marshes retroactive. The amended version of the bill has since been approved by both the full House and…

It’s not getting worse. It’s been there all along.

Everything is fine here.

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. State capitol of the bayous of Louisiana. Home of the Louisiana State University Tigers. Land where streets of stately southern homes are lined by rows of oak trees as old as the country itself. City where Mardi Gras beads hang from power lines year round. Home to crawfish and gumbo, beignets, and daiquiris in go cups.

And also home to the Jaguars of Southern University & the Human Jukebox & the Dancing Dolls. The location of the first bus boycott of the civil rights era, in 1953, organized by the Rev. T.J. Jemison & Mr. Willis Reed, Sr.* Home of the longest desegregation case in the United States, settled in 2003. Where nearly a third of children live under the poverty level. Where blacks and whites are still separated by our own Mason Dixon line that we call Florida Blvd. The city Alton Sterling called…

There’s f**k all wrong with her

There’s f**k all wrong with her

You've gotta have Gumption....

I’m sat here broken and sobbing.

I just had one of the most humiliating experiences a person can have, and the worst part?

It won’t be the last time.

It’s a sunny Tuesday afternoon. I’ve just had my hair done for the first time in a year; my boyfriend arrives tomorrow and we are off on holiday with the family at the weekend. I’m smiling, and excited as I park my van near my daughters school, ready to collect my children. In the playground Mums and Nans tell me how great it is to see me, and how good I’m looking after a week or so off the radar, poorly. It’s quite lovely, and their kindness and words mean the world to me, when I have been feeling so low.

I collect my youngest two, and meander back to the car, noticing a traffic cone on the pavement blocking my…
